Government Needs to Double Net Immigration Within 5 Years
The independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) published figures that showed the government would need to double net migration in the next 5 years in order to reach its target of a £10bn budget surplus by the year 2020.
It has been suggested that bringing down the deficit each year, will only be achieved by creating news jobs and bringing in migrants to fill those vacancies. The OBR announced the UK will be able to generate more than 1.5m new jobs before 2020.
Labour MP John Mann has suggested the projected new jobs cannot be filled new school leaver or those that have been inactive. He pointed out that public finances will benefit from higher tax revenues following higher immigration, a point the chancellor failed to recognise. Without the increase in immigration the projected budget surplus will be zero.
Net migration in 2015 has been announced at 336,000. David Cameron has pledged to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands. The Chancellor has been accused of refusing to admit that he plans on relying on a rise in net migration to achieve his goals.
These next 5 years will be interesting.
